Why your company can’t afford to ignore mobile career solutions

womanondeviceBy the end of 2014, HR and recruitment sites are likely to get 50 per cent of their traffic from mobile devices. Here’s why they’re so indispensible to modern businesses

If you’re still wondering whether your company should spend money on getting a mobile version of its careers site, consider this statistic: four years ago, HR and recruitment sites got around five per cent of their traffic from mobile devices – by the end of 2014 that’s on course to hit 50 per cent. But these numbers are only one reason why bespoke mobile solutions are so vital for HR and recruitment sites.

To start with, there’s a difference between a mobile website and a mobile app. A mobile website is essentially the same site you would log on to at home but optimised for a mobile device to improve the user experience, whereas an app is specifically downloaded from an app store offered by companies like Apple and Google and then constantly in front of that user. Apps are available on four main platforms (iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows), with just over 80 per cent of all apps downloaded worldwide coming from either iOS (Apple) or Android (Google).

Either way, the mobile option for recruitment is increasingly critical. Research by Morgan Stanley estimates that 50 per cent of all worldwide internet traffic will be from a mobile device by the end of 2014, while Google also announced this year that sites not optimised for mobile will be demoted.

According to AllTheTopBananas.com, the leading builder of mobile recruitment apps in the UK, some companies are seeing a cost-per-hire of under £300 per applicant with through mobile. Yet beyond that, the benefits of going mobile make it hard to ignore.

One of the major positives from a mobile app is the ability to provide push notifications to the user. Having purchased the app on the platform of their choice, the user will begin a search for jobs that will include specific areas such as location and salary. Once the search has been created this data is then stored, so that the next time a job is uploaded onto the app that relates to this criteria, that user is notified immediately of the new position in a similar way to receiving a text message. This is an ongoing process that happens every time a new role appears on the app, meaning that candidate is among the first to hear about it. In addition to that, push notifications only appear on apps, and research by AllTheTopBananas.com shows that 80 per cent of the mobile apps they produce have push notifications clicked as soon as they’re opened.

Other benefits of mobile solutions include full social media and video content optimisation, as well as the fact that all the information from the desktop site is included, simply in a more user-friendly way for mobile users. In most cases there is also an option for people to apply for the role in question from their mobile device. It’s incredible to think that a mere decade ago, the job application process still involved envelopes, stamps and a trip to the nearest post box.

With huge companies like Homebase and Argos having had mobile sites and apps made by AllTheTopBananas.com, it is yet further irrefutable proof of how important mobile optimisation is in the field of HR and recruitment. In fact, some organisations are already moving on to the next generation of mobile solutions, with ‘onboarding apps’ to give new recruits general information about the company and useful tips for their first day at work, and internal communications apps for businesses to provide an intranet-style format to employees that includes general information such as company history and share prices.
